This week, Maryam Alkhawaja will be returning to Bahrain on a crucial mission. Presently, Bahrain faces a significant human rights crisis as over 800 political prisoners in Jau Prison are on a hunger strike, demanding improved prison conditions. This protest, which commenced on 7 August, marks one of the most significant political actions in Bahrain since the repression of mass pro-democracy protests in 2011.

Diplomatic Pressure

  • Given Abdulhadi Alkhawaja’s Danish citizenship, we want to raise the matter directly with all relevant government officials as well as the Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs. Email them, Tweet to their accounts, mention them in them in posts and stories.
  • The US State Department has reported that the Bahraini Crown Prince will visit the White House next week.  Pressure on the US Government is also very helpful. You can do that by emailing your representative or by publicly demanding pressure from US officials to help resolve the hunger strike by meeting the political prisoners’ demands
  • The OHCHR announced that they will be conducting a country visit to Bahrain from 15-20 September 2023. We ask you to call on the OHCHR to visit Al-Khawaja and other political prisoners in Jau Prison. You can do that by emailing them directly or by sharing your demands publicly on social media.
