On 5 January 2023, from Jau Prison, imprisoned Bahraini human rights defender, Abdul-Hadi Al-Khawaja, sent a voice note in which he dictated a letter addressed to the President of the Second High Criminal Court of Appeal in Bahrain.

On the occasion of the court session being held today on Thursday, January 5, 2023, to consider criminal case No. 07/2022/09680, which was originally filed against me by the Jau Central Prison administration and then the Public Prosecution, on the charge of insulting a foreign country (Israel) and the charge of insulting a public employee (a policeman accused of torturing prisoners).

Today, the legal defence of Abdul-Hadi Al-Khawaja withdrew from trial proceedings after being instructed by Al-Khawaja to do so should Bahraini authorities fail to bring him to trial proceedings or deny his right to meet with his lawyer prior to the hearing. His defence handed a letter from him to the judge and then withdrew from the courtroom.

Abdul-Hadi Al-Khawaja, Bahrain’s leading human rights defender and Danish citizen, is facing a potential charge of “inciting hatred against the regime” that could carry up to 10 years in prison. The charge is currently filed and “under investigation” at the public prosecution, and could be moved to trial at any time.

Today, the Second Lower Criminal Court in Bahrain upheld two separate criminal charges levelled against Abdul-Hadi Al-Khawaja, his family stated.

Today, 16 November, renowned human rights defender and dual Danish-Bahraini citizen, Abdul-Hadi Al-Khawaja had a scheduled hearing in Bahrain’s Second Lower Criminal Court over new criminal charges linked to his protesting the denial of calls to his daughters in Jau Prison.

Tomorrow 16 November, renowned human rights defender and dual Danish-Bahraini citizen, Abdul- Hadi Al-Khawaja will be tried in Bahrain’s Second Lower Criminal Court over new criminal charges linked to his protesting of punitive measures in Jau Prison.
